In March, 2017 Tamaasha Theatre retrofitted a “bungalow” in the Aram Nagar area of Versova, Andheri, and established Studio Tamaasha, a neighbourhood arts centre. The facility consists of a central performance/work space which can seat up to 50 people, changing facilities for performers, and an open air courtyard for audiences and performers to mingle and engage.
In the one year of its existence, Tamaasha has hosted more than a hundred performances of theatre, dance, music, performed poetry, and puppetry by multiple performers. In addition, we also initiate and host cultural-research presentations, dramatic readings from regional literature, workshops, and mentorship sessions for young performers. These events have already attracted an audience of 4000 odd people from the immediate neighbourhood, and from as far afield as Thane and Mulund.
Studio Tamaasha has been recognized by eminent theatre personalities and the press, as an important contribution to the social and cultural landscape of Mumbai. Shanta Gokhale, one of our most foremost theatre critics and cultural historians says,
“Studio Tamaasha, run by performers for performers on a non-commercial basis shares a spirit of openness, and has the potential of being a hang out for shared views and ideas … a happy, happy place to be in.”
